Panic disorders usually occur after frightening experiences or prolonged stress, but can also occur without a trigger. An individual experiencing a panic attack may believe they have a life-threatening illness. Panic attacks can last anywhere from 10 minutes to hours. Panic attacks may lead to alterations in behavior to avoid future attacks.

Phobias can be traced to specific causes which makes them different than other anxiety disorders. The person with the phobia may know that it is irrational; however, they are unable to control the anxiety that is associated with it. There are many possible triggers for phobias; the trigger is dependent upon the individual’s specific phobia.

Social Anxiety Disorders can include stage fright, a fear of intimacy, and a fear of humiliation. A person with social anxiety disorder may go out of their way to avoid social interactions. This can lead to isolation and seclusion, causing daily life to become very difficult.

Post-traumatic Stress Disorder is an anxiety disorder which originates from a traumatic event such as; sexual assault, military combat, hostage situations, serious accidents, etc. People with PTSD may alter their behaviors in order to avoid their triggers.

Separation anxiety is considered a disorder when the reaction of an individual is disproportionate to the separation. People with separation anxiety disorders may exhibit panic systems when a separation occurs.

This eating disorder is easy for the individual to hide from others for long periods of time because they carry out their episodes in secret.

The Non-purging type of Bulimia is not a very common type. Most people who have bulimia have the purging type. The bingeing and following actions are a way for the individual to prevent weight gain, gain a sense of control, or cope with difficult situations. This disorder may make a teen more susceptible to other mood disorders later in life. It is estimated that 4 out of every 100 teenagers meet the criteria for this disorder.

Bipolar disorder causes the individual to experience severe mood changes. The periods of mania may encourage risky activities that the teenager would not usually partake in. One example is that the adolescent may engage in unprotected sex which has many negatove consequences for them. This is a very serious disorder, especially because of the unpredictability of the manic period. It is important for a person with Bipolar Disorder to seek treatment to keep them out of danger; however, it is important to note that there is no cure for Bipolar Disorder.

Major depression is considered to be the most severe type of depression. According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness, 8 percent of teenagers meet the criteria for Major Depression. After puberty, girls are twice as likely as boys to be diagnosed with depression. It is important for anyone who is diagnosed with major depression to seek help or treatment because it can lead to suicidal thoughts. If loss of life can be prevented through therapy and possibly medication, then it should be.
